  8.  AB    OBJECTIVE: Well-trained providers of pastoral/spiritual support are
  9.        essential members of a comprehensive HIV care team. However, pastoral
  10.        caregivers often find themselves unprepared, isolated, unsupported, or
  11.        struggling to reflect theologically with others upon their experience of
  12.        providing care in the context of HIV/AIDS. METHODS: In response to
  13.        requests by Catholic AIDS providers for a national organization to
  14.        support initial training, continuing education, peer support, and
  15.        theological reflection of its ministers, the National Catholic AIDS
  16.        Network (NCAN) was formed in 1990. RESULTS: NCAN now provides technical
  17.        assistance, communications networking, referral, and opportunities for
  18.        theological reflection among 2700 individuals and 600 organizations
  19.        involved in HIV/AIDS care. NCAN also sponsors an annual HIV/AIDS
  20.        ministry conference for several hundred participants from the US and
  21.        abroad, and publishes a national referral directory of organizations and
  22.        individuals providing HIV/AIDS services. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
  23.        NCAN exemplifies one model of a grassroots organization that can be
  24.        developed at a national level to educate and support pastoral ministers,
  25.        to stimulate theological reflection, and to increase the consciousness
  26.        of the churches to their responsibility in the AIDS epidemic.
